Imagine the museum of tomorrow: defining values, designing experiences
The role of cultural organizations is being redefined in our current societies. France Muséums invites experts and leaders from the cultural sector to a day of discussion at the Expo 2020 Dubai: Les Rencontres by France Muséums. This time of exchange will be an opportunity for France Muséums to propose inspiring visions about the museum of tomorrow and its role in the contemporary world.
Symposium
During the Expo 2020 Dubaï and as part of the Creative Fortnight organized by the France Pavilion, France Muséums sets up a day of exchange on Saturday, January 15, 2022, dedicated to the ‘Museum of Tomorrow’. Echoing the themes of the World Expo – ‘Connecting Minds and Creating the Future’ through sustainability, mobility and opportunity – this day aims to consider the future of museums, the values they defend and their roles facing the major challenges of the 21st century and those to come.
The highlight of the day is a symposium bringing together renowned and influential figures and experts from the international cultural sector, to offer a unique opportunity to discover visions and exemplary projects.
A glimpse of the day
- For the opening of this day, HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi will engage in a discussion around Culture as a tool in the construction of a tolerant society. Projects on Saadiyat Island such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi or the future Abrahamic Family House are reflecting this vision.
- The first round table will be dedicated to the challenges of sustainability for museums and to the impact of cultural strategies on territories and contributions to local communities. The speakers – Lazare Eloundou, Director of the Culture and Emergencies Program at UNESCO, Kyung Wook Kim, President and CEO of Incheon International Airport Corporation (Seoul, South Korea) and Lina Ghotmeh, Architect – will discuss the way how museums participate in the development of more sustainable environments.
- Laurence des Cars, President and Director of the Louvre Museum (Paris, France), a long-time partner of France Muséums, will be the guest speaker for the opening of the second round table. Her statement will focus on the dialogue between museums and society.
- During the second panel discussion, museum directors and producers of experiences will consider how museum projects that are more accessible, relevant and entertaining can serve societal values and issues. The floor will be given to Nathalie Bondil, Director of the Museum and Exhibitions Department at the Institut du monde arabe (Paris, France), Katrina Sedgwick OAM, President and Director of the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (Melbourne, Australia), Shirin Frangoul-Brückner, Founding Partner and Managing Director of Atelier Brückner (Germany), and Vincent Campredon, Director of the Musée national de la Marine (Paris, France).
Throughout the day, France Muséums organizes meetings for professionals and workshop for young visitors to question the role of the museum in a playful and stimulating way. Professionals from all cultural fields will take part, surrounded by experts, in a collaborative masterclass to think about tomorrow’s tools for the improvement of visitor experience, while creative meetings will allow school groups to become exhibition curators for a day and create their own mini-museum.
